Accounting

The textbook I currently use is Century 21 Accounting: Multicolumn Journal, 9th Edition.

For each chapter, I have students write or type the Key Terms. Next we review the chapter and complete the Study Guide. This might seem backwards, but my students do not like to read the text. This ensures that they have a basic understanding of the chapter before we begin the problems.
I scan the workbook pages, insert them in SMART Notebook, and display them on the SMARTBoard. Depending on my students and how well they grasp each section, we typically complete the Work Together and then move on to the next section.
I don't typically give homework since students already have so much in the core subjects. They have 1 class period to complete the Mastery Problem. If it is not finished, they take it home. The Challenge Problem is extra credit.
In a perfect world, we would cover one chapter a week and test on Friday. This rarely happens and usually takes about 7 days.
Aplia's Online Working Papers - I tried this a few years ago and did not feel like my students were grasping the concept of the whole Accounting Cycle. There are too many drop down boxes with obvious answers. Personally, I feel at least first year accounting students need to complete the work on paper. There are problems throughout the text that can be used with Excel.
Other Assignments - Each year I do things differently depending on the ability level of my students and how many students are in the class. I often assign the Cases for Critical Thinking.
Bell Ringers - use the questions at the end of each section for review
Chapter 1Chapter 2

First Day Ideas - Have students draw what they think an accountant looks like and briefly explain them. This leads to discussion of what attributes a good accountant has, types of accounting jobs and places they work.

Writing - Give students a one page story with 10 transactions, read this together, and students journalize the transactions. Then give them account titles that they use to write a story incorporating 10 transactions.

Accounting Bingo - Give students a list of accounting terms that they write on a BINGO card. As you call off terms, they mark them off and someone states the definition. You could also give the definition and have students call out the term.

Grading - Each workbook page is worth 10 points if completed. At the beginning of class, check students homework. Then review via SMART Board and students make corrections. For tests, grade each line.

Blooms Taxonomy Level 6 - Have students create a simulation, including transactions and correctly completing all forms.
